Battistero Paleocristiano e Parrocchia di Santa Maria Maggiore

The early Christian Baptistery of Santa Maria Maggiore, known as ‘La Rotonda’, is situated in the San Clemente district and forms part of a complex of monuments that includes the Chapel of Santa Caterina, the Antiquarium and the ancient gardens.

Built in the 6th century AD within the walls of ancient Nuceria, the baptistery is a rare example in southern Italy in terms of size, monumentality and architectural quality. The building, with a central plan, was constructed using reused Roman-era materials and sits atop older structures, of which polychrome mosaic floors are still visible.

The large dome, the marble columns of various origins and the monumental baptismal font make it one of the most significant examples of early Christian architecture. The site also preserves medieval paintings and an Antiquarium housing stone and archaeological finds from the ancient city of Nuceria.
