Domus del Decumano

Domus del Decumano

The Domus del Decumano di Nuceria is located in the village of San Clemente, north-east of the ancient city, near the early Christian baptistery of Santa Maria Maggiore. The archaeological site was discovered in 1979 and excavated until 1984, during works in an area now partially bisected by the modern railway line.

The excavations have revealed part of a Roman insula comprising a domus dating from between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD and a section of the Decumano Inferiore, one of the city’s main thoroughfares. Of the house, only a few rooms on the western side and half of the marble impluvium are visible; the rest of the building lies buried beneath thick layers of alluvial and volcanic deposits.

The cocciopesto floors with geometric mosaics and the walls retain traces of several construction phases and pictorial decorations in the Fourth Style. Ancient tabernae line the street, whilst the discovery of Christian burials in the hortus bears witness to the gradual decline of the urban layout in late antiquity.
